Joe Klein talks about a piece he is writing for Sanity Clause, his Substack newsletter. The theme of the piece (roughly speaking) is that 2024 is 1924 revisited. Isolationism/pacifism, immigration and tariffs were dominant issues then and and are dominant issues today. There’s even the (very) remote chance of a “brokered convention” this time. In 1924, it took 103 ballots before the Democrats decided on their presidential nominee.
I’m intrigued by No Labels because I have no doubt that support for the idea is in the mid-forties, at least. In reality, it’s going to take someone serious (and someone willing to lose) at the top of the ticket to make No Labels competitive. That said, people are desperate for a rational alternative.
Joe and I talk about this and we take a look back at “big things” that happened in 2023.
