1. We’re back to regularly scheduled programming. The Weekend Edition of News Items will be distributed tomorrow.
2. A new episode of America’s fastest-growing podcast1, ‘Alternate Shots’, will be distributed today, probably around noon. The link above is to our YouTube “channel”. If you prefer other “channels”, you can listen to the new episode (and all previous episodes) by clicking on these hyperlinks: Apple, Amazon, and Spotify. We’re on a number of other podcast platforms as well.
3. My most recent missive on AI was posted at Political News Items. I subsequently forgot to post it at News Items.
It’s a typically hybrid post; some of it by me, some of it excerpts from posts written by others. In this case, most of it is excerpts written by experts on the subject of the “Hugging Face hack”.
Many think the “Hugging Face hack” is a turning point in the AI “story”: A jailbreak of AI agents, organizing and executing on their own, un-tethered from human oversight.
Here’s an excerpt (written by Ajeya Cotra) from the piece:
This incident was far more severe than I expected, and far more severe than previous publicly documented misalignment incidents, both in terms of how concerning the agents’ motives were and the feats they achieved in pursuit of those motives.
