1. The New York Times:

Nearly five years into its fight for national survival, Ukraine has entered a moment of intense vulnerability, under growing pressure not only from Russia but also now from the United States.

A double blow came overnight on Wednesday.

Ukraine said that its military, with no warning, had lost some critical access to a military version of Starlink, a pillar of its battlefield communications. Kyiv relies on the satellite internet network, known as Starshield, which is paid for by the Pentagon. That led Ukrainian officials and analysts to surmise that the restrictions had come from Washington, as President Trump is locked in his latest feud with Ukraine’s leadership.

At the same time, Russia unleashed dozens of ballistic missiles in a broad attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure early Wednesday, cutting power to 600,000 people in the capital, Kyiv. It was a dark omen for a rapidly approaching winter in which Russia is gearing up to try to push Ukraine to the breaking point as Kyiv runs low on lifesaving air defenses.

It was unclear how long the Starshield restrictions would remain in place. (Source: nytimes.com)

2. Russia has nearly finished building a major new base for launching jet-powered drones in just six weeks, according to defense experts and a Reuters analysis of satellite imagery, in the latest expansion of its attack capability close to Ukraine. The site in what was an empty field in Russia’s southwestern Rostov region on August 31 had become a complex facility the size of around 126 soccer pitches by Wednesday, commercial imagery provided by Planet Labs and Airbus showed. The construction coincides with a surge in the use of Russian jet-powered attack drones against Ukraine, which is struggling to intercept the faster weapons that can travel at speeds of up to 600 km per hour. With the full-scale war well into its fifth year, Kyiv expects Russia to further escalate jet drone and missile attacks this winter. (Source: reuters.com)

3. ISW:

Ukrainian officials reported in-motion speed restrictions on SpaceX’s Starshield communications network over Ukraine overnight on October 13 to 14 that will significantly disrupt Ukraine’s jet-powered drone interception efforts and intermediate-range strike campaign. Ukrainian Presidential Advisor on Defense Technologies Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov and former adviser to the Ukrainian defense minister Serhii Sternenko reported on October 14 that SpaceX implemented a speed limit of 100 miles per hour (roughly 160 kilometers per hour) for the terminals connected to the Starshield communications network operating in Ukraine. Starshield is a more secure, jam-resistant, and military-oriented version of a Starlink satellite network that SpaceX designed for government use, while Starlink serves civilian and commercial purposes.
