The World They Made.
By Evan Thomas.
I’ve never met Evan Thomas. He’s a subscriber to News Items. We have mutual friends. We correspond on email now and then. I’ve read a number of his books.
One of those books is entitled ‘The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made’, which he co-authored with Walter Isaacson. On the book’s Amazon page, it’s (accurately) described as “the classic account of the American statesmen who rebuilt the world after the catastrophe of World War II”.
As Davos unfolded a couple of weeks ago, it felt like we were witnessing the irreversible unravelling of NATO and the “Western Alliance.” So it seemed like a good idea to go back to the beginning, and have someone describe the creation of NATO and the “Western Alliance.”
I emailed Evan and asked if he would be willing to do that. He said yes. A day later, a Word document landed in my in-box. Its contents are below.
