It will be a jumbo edition, as we’ve delayed it twice due to three recent and significant developments in American politics (the Republican National Convention, the end of the Biden campaign and the ascension of Kamala Harris). Two items about the most recent polling are below. There’s a lot more where they came from.

Finally: At some point this weekend, we will post Mary Williams Walsh’s piece on Kamala Harris and the fight over what is known as The California Rule. It’s an unflattering portrait. It’s also true.

At the end of this subscriber note is an excerpt from Andrew Sullivan’s piece on Kamala Harris, which was posted yesterday. It too is an unflattering portrait.

We’re not running Mary’s piece and Andrew’s excerpt because we’re anti-Harris. We’re running both because they inform what will happen next, when enthusiasm gives way to closer examination.
